Polar Muppet Baby

Wednesday, June 3, 2009:

We had our first ultrasound and nurse visit today.  I was not feeling well that day, and I think it might have affected my excitement about seeing the baby.  I knew that this early image would look like a grain of rice or blob of paint.  Still, when the technician first turned the screen toward me, I was excited that I could identify, without help, my baby's head, body, and arms and legs (well, stumps of arms and legs).  She continued to take measurements (baby is 2 cm long and has a heart rate of 178, due date of January 7), then printed the last image for us to take.  What a disappointment when she handed me a picture of a blob...well, if you turn it sideways, it kinda looks like a penguin...with Gonzo's nose.

Now, I realize that a printed picture doesn't look as clear as the image on the screen, but she didn't even print from the good image on the screen.  Even the nurse we talked to next said she couldn't identify any part of the baby for us, and agreed that the first image that was printed and now in my file (which apparently I can not have a copy of) is a good early picture.

So, for now I will carry around my Polar Muppet Baby, and trust that God is growing something a little more human-like inside me.  And just for comparison's sake later on, here's a picture of my baby belly (or what little there is to see of it at this point):
